March 29, 2011 – Andy Butler, Compatible Computer Services (CCS)

Our speaker/presenter this week was Andy Butler owner of Compatible Computer Services.

Andy told us that he has been in business since 1985 and there have been several iterations of his company.

Andy chose the name Compatible because when he began there was IBM, s or Compatibles, so he named the company Compatible.

Beginning originally as a retail store Andy had to restructure as the prices of computers dropped and the margins all but evaporated. It was impossible to compete with the big box stores.

Compatible Computers is a value added business that offers point of sale systems and customized applications for businesses and individuals.

Andy charges by the hour and not by a flat shop rate. This is fairer to his customers and his business as you are only paying for the work being done. You are not being charged for example a flat 3 hour rate for a job that may take only an hour to do.

A lot of Compatible Computer business comes from virus removal. Typically by the time a customer brings a computer in for service it is a real mess, and the customer has already tried whatever virus removal program they have available.

Andy cautioned us to be aware of the fake virus removal programs and scams that are on the internet. Some of them will offer a free scan then try to sell you their program. Unfortunately these are viruses. Any warned that if you get a pop-up or any other offer for a free virus scan, do NOT select either of the options they offer, instead shut down your computer. Because which ever option you select is probably going to infect your computer.

Andy told us there are only 2 point of sale vendors in metro. While the other is larger they are much more expensive and do not offer the same level of customer service to their clients.

Andy told us that this week end he will be participating in the ApEx tradeshow in Moncton. This event features all things to do with the hospitality industry. http://www.crfa.ca/tradeshows/apex/default.asp

Compatible Computers can develop applications to automate repetitive tasks. An example he gave is he developed a program for a client that reduced a 12 hour task into push button task.

They have converted files from Lotus 1, 2 and 3 to correct existing code in an H&R Block program.

Andy reminded members that he offers a $500 finders fee to anyone who directs business his way.

Andy closed by answering questions from members.

Contact Andy and Compatible Computer Services for all your computer issues and questions and get the job done right the first time.
