Inkjet Printer Cartridge Care Tips

1.   Don’t let your ink cartridges dry out!

Regardless of brand, all inkjet cartridges have one thing in common – they all use liquid ink, and can dry out if left unused for too long. When an ink cartridge dries out, the ink doesn’t evaporate completely; some of the chemicals and dyes which make up the ink are left behind and can harden into a goo not unlike shoe polish. As you can imagine, this doesn’t help the printer one bit!

To avoid this problem, bring your cartridges in to be refilled as soon as they run empty. You should also avoid storing your cartridge in extremely hot or cold places like on your car dash, or in the fridge.

Allowing a cartridge to dry out can affect the volume of ink that it will accept when it is refilled. The foam inside an ink cartridge has two different states relating to ink: it can be hydrophilic or hydrophobic. When the foam is slightly wet, it is hydrophilic; this means that it will easily absorb and hold any ink that is put into it. When the foam is allowed to dry out it becomes hydrophobic, and it will tend to repel any ink that is put into the cartridge. Cartridges containing hydrophobic foam can be very difficult to refill, and may not perform as well as cartridges that are refilled before they dry out.

Leaving your ink cartridge in an extremely hot place like on your dashboard will cause the ink in the cartridge to heat up and expand – resulting in leaking which can cause a big mess.

2.   Don’t Run Your Printer Cartridge On Empty

You wouldn’t let your car run out of gas then push it to the gas station would you? Although it’s tempting to try and wring every last drop of ink out of a cartridge, it can damage the cartridge or even your printer!

It’s always best to stop printing as soon as you start to notice quality problems – even if it’s just with one color. When you begin to see fading or horizontal lines across your prints, stop printing and bring your cartridge to your nearest Island Ink-Jet location so we can fill ‘er up!

In order to understand why you shouldn’t run your cartridges dry, it is necessary to understand a bit about how inkjet cartridges work. Inside most ink cartridges there are hundreds of small heaters which cause small drops of ink to expand and shoot onto the paper (You can view a video of this process here). During printing, these heaters can reach temperatures as high as 300°C (That’s 572°F!).

Usually the cartridge uses ink to cool down there heaters; however when a cartridge runs out of ink, there is nothing to cool down the heaters. When you try to print with an empty ink cartridge it can overheat, damaging the cartridge’s nozzles, warping them or melting them shut. We generally refer to this as “burning out” a print head. Depending upon which printer you have, this can permanently damage either your cartridge, or your printer. Yikes!

3.   Don’t Touch The Printer Cartridge Electronics

Most inkjet cartridges have at least one piece of complex electronics on them. Some have green electronic chips, while others have strips with copper dots on them (such as the picture here). Touching any of these electronic components can be very damaging to the cartridge!

You need to be especially careful with the print head (The part where the ink comes out). It is best if nothing ever touches this part of the cartridge. When packing up your cartridge to bring it to Island Ink-Jet, try to avoid having this part of the cartridge touch whatever bag you’re using the bring it in.

There are several types of damage that can occur as a result of physical contact with the print head and other electronics:

1. Static electricity can build up in a person, and then jump to the cartridge causing Electro-Static Damage (ESD). This is the same effect as zapping yourself on a doorknob after walking across a carpet on a dry day. ESD seriously damage electronics, shorting out and destroying the circuitry inside. Damaged caused by ESD can not be fixed; the only solution is to replace your cartridge.

2. Oil from your skin can also interfere with cartridge operations. The oil can coat some of the electrical contacts, and prevent the cartridge from interacting properly with the printer. This is usually easily solved by cleaning the electronics with a lint free paper towel, but it can cause a lot of confusing errors.

3. The nozzles that fire the ink out of a cartridge are tiny – less than a 10th the width of a human hair. These nozzles are tightly packed on the print head, and can be seriously damaged by tiny scratches or dings. If they become even slightly misaligned, it can cause a significant drop in print quality that is not correctable – even by our expert staff!

4. If the cartridge is packaged with the print head touching something else, especially plastic, it can cause ink to be pulled out of the cartridge. The ink then spreads around, and combines with the other colors. This leads to a problem called “Cross Contamination”, where the colors are mixed together – yellow comes out green, blue comes out purple, and so forth. In most cases this is correctable by our technicians, but it will increase the time need to refill the cartridge, and may cause quality problems, or decrease the number of times the cartridge can be refilled.
