Mr. Electric prides itself on the royal treatment service it provides all of their customers. When Mr. Electric technicians come to your home they place mats down to prevent tracking in mud, and even put booties over their foot\wear. When the job is completed they even do a thorough clean up.

Mr. Electric has a price menu for the jobs they perform, so pricing is not made up as they go. Everyone pays the same price for the same service. While performing the job Mr. Electric technicians will also note any discrepancies that may need attention, particularly if they present a potential safety hazard.

Amanda told us that during Fire Prevention month technicians will also inspect smoke detectors to ensure they are working. Amanda also told us that smoke detectors also have an expiration date which is typically 10 years. We were also reminded that by-laws also have made detectors mandatory in each room of the dwelling not just each level.

Mr. Electric is an education source for its customers and the parent company publishes a quarterly newsletter.

Amanda reminded us that if you need a generator they can do an assessment of your needs and recommend the required size for your needs, and follow up with the sale and installation of the generator.

Continue reading »]]> Mike Hodgson spoke to the membership this week and gave us a briefing on some changes to the Elections Act.

Mike is a Returns Officer for Elections Nova Scotia. He told us that the house recently passed a new elections act that has 325 sections. The changes that have been made were in large part recommendations that Mike suggested be made to the act.

There will now be 4 polls, 1) Continuous, 2) Write in Ballot, 3) An Advanced Poll and 4) regular elect day poll.

The write in ballot is divided into 3 sections. In the first someone will be sent to your home to get your vote. In the second section you can visit the office of the returning officer to cast your vote and the third will have a ballot delivered to the bedridden wherever they may be.

Deployed Armed Forces members will now be able to vote online.

Advanced polls will now run for 2 days.

Voters will be issued an info card which will contain a distinct identifier. This is a lifetime identifier that will be yours for as long as you live. The card will also have a barcode which when used will make the voting process much faster. This process is for provincial elections only.

This has meant additional training for election officials to learn the new processes. Fortunately the training is available online.

Continue reading »]]> Duncan McGenn gave us a brief update on his company and the variety of services they provide. Among these is a new service where he can pressure wash your decks and bring them back to a like new condition. He can also pressure wash vinyl siding and make it look like new.

The pressure washer uses only water but at 5,000 psi. This essentially removes a thin layer of the old material and brings out the look of new material hidden under all the dirt wear.

Ron Norquay recently had Duncan’s crew come in and do his home for him and was delighted with the results.

Duncan also told us that he has also branched out into duct cleaning. This includes dryer ducts and heating ducts, and cleaning vents and filters in air exchange systems.

Continue reading »]]> Beverly was our guest speaker and spoke to various aspects of the Insurance business. She talked about Auto insurance and some of the false assumptions regarding parking lots incidents. She also advised that Liability Insurance should be at least two million vice one million. Home Insurance was next and the pints presented were the 80% clause on replacement value should the residence be a total loss. There was also discussion regarding Oil Heat and Fuel Tanks. The reading of the Tag on the Tank describing the thickness of the metal versus the age and the risk of failure. There was also mention of Double tanks and the alarm system available today.

Life Insurance was the next item covered and Beverly described the three life paths were a person works and retires and lives out life and the insurance they need to carry them through a balance of Permanent and Term Insurance. The there is the interruption of the working life and the need to have protective insurance to cover loss of income as well as the coverages above. And Lastly there is the case where life ends early and unexpectedly and the need for insurance to cover the the costs of the Mortgage and other loans and well as final expenses and the schooling of children.

Continue reading »]]> This week Don Fancy spoke to us about some observations he has made with regards to the paint industry.

Don told us that he recently visited the new Rona Store and was taken by the changes in paint and marketing strategies over the years.

Don noted that he thought Rona had done a great job in getting the most from the space during the renovation offering a great selection of very well presented products.

Don told us that when he started in the paint business Seiko paint was unheard of in Metro. In 7 years he built the name to become the dominate name in paint in metro increasing sales from $700,000/ year to 12 million dollars.

Don told us that these days brand name is not as important as it was in the past with most companies making good quality products. Some of the important things to look for in a quality paint are appearance, cover ability and ease of care and of course price. Don did note that it is still important to buy a quality paint to avoid being disappointed with the results.

A lot of the established paint companies have branched into private label brands, making paint with a Sears, CTC, and Rona etc label on the can. Don noted that the recipe for the private label paints maybe different but they are able to keep the cost down by making the paint in large enough quantities to make it cost effective.
