February 8, 2011 – Ron Kent, BP Home Design

Ron told us that while he is basically retired from the design business he still does some jobs to keep himself in the game. He will help other designers with their overflow and as a favors to friends and associates. If fact Ron has several very satisfied clients within the Metro Business Association.

Ron told us that he began his career working with Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation where he spent 25 years.

He decided that he would like to start his own business and started BP Design, working from a basement office in his home. The BP in the business name is the initials of his 2 sons, Brian and Paul. The business grew largely from word of mouth from past clients and referrals. His business grew to the point he needed more space and added an addition to his home to give him more room to work.

In the mid 1990s Ron and 5 other like minded people started the Nova Scotia Home Designers Association. http://www.nshomedesigners.com/   The purpose of the association is help assure clients they are dealing with qualified trades people in all phases of their home construction or renovation. The association holds out very high standards of accreditation.

Ron answered the question why hire a designer? Most significantly a certified designer can save you a lot of time and money. Ron sits with his clients and helps them work through their dream design and making it a reality. Ron with his many years of experience can help guide the client towards the best design for their specific needs. Once the details of the clients needs are established Ron will then pass on the plan to a builder. Ron works with the clients until they are happy. The more time spent in the design phase the more cost effective the project will be. By taking the time to go over the details there will not be any surprises as the project progresses.

Ron doesn’t just focus on the immediate needs of his clients, but takes into consideration possible future needs. An example is what happens if one day in the future someone becomes disabled and needs a wheelchair to get around. Or are the doors wide enough to allow wheelchair access to bathrooms and kitchens?  It is best to incorporate these requirements during the initial build/renovation phase then to do it later.

Ron’s rates are anywhere from $40-$200/hr depending on the complexity of the design.
